- Sensibility: A muted sexual fantasy, a quickly healing knife wound, a married woman's promiscuity, a very forgiving girlfriend, and a very strange set of choices about involving the police in the crimes all create big unresolved issues for the story.
- Cinematography: Visually incredible and unique. Lighting is so excellent and striking that almost every frame from this film is a recognizable still. Sound design is also amazing, with an interesting blend of score, musical soundtrack, and sound effects enhancing the dream-like effects sprinkled throughout.
- Energy: There's a huge high during the middle with an acid trip sex sequence and a wild joy-ride which are followed by a pretty serious lull which is only reversed for a brief moment near the end.
- Narrative: Unfortunately, the weakest part of the film is the story. There's are a lot of loose ends and the characters are all, even ignoring Frank, very strange. However, Frank's character is so interesting and the basic premise is interesting enough to get past these issues.
- T-Points: the film received four bonus points: one for an amazing opening sequence, one for Dennis Hopper's performance of Frank which has a very particular brand of insanity, and two for incredible color, lighting, and shot making throughout.
Is this the most visually interesting vilm ever made? This film is definitely a paragon of visual storytelling.
